Dr. Paringit Goes Back to UP Diliman
TOKYO, April 8
- Last March 31, 2005, Dr. Eric Paringit flew back home after spending five
and a half years in Japan.
Eric started as a research student for 6 months before
entering the doctoral program. He completed his Doctor of Engineering
degree on March 2003 and then continued as a JSPS Post-doctoral Research
Fellow for 2 years. He specializes on remote sensing and field measurement
systems for coastal environment studies.
Eric is currently an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Geodetic Engineering, University of the Philippines, Diliman,
where he will be instrumental in improving the Master of Science in Remote
Sensing program and taking the UP Training Center for Applied Geodesy and
Photogrammetry to greater heights.

Scholar Receives Japan Concrete Insitute (JCI) Award
Melito
A. Baccay, a Ministry of Education Culture Sports Science and
Technology of Japan (Mombukagakusho) scholar and presently taking Doctor
of Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology was chosen as one of the
recipients of the 2005 Japan Concrete Institute (JCI) Award. His paper
“Influence of Bleeding on Minute Properties and Steel Corrosion in
Concrete” published in the Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology
(Vol. 2, No.2, July 2004) was selected as “Best Journal Paper” by JCI.
In recognition for his outstanding contribution, Dr. Shigeyoshi
Nagataki, JCI President, presented him a plaque, a certificate of
recognition and a cash prize which he shared with his co-authors (Prof.
Nobuaki Otsuki, Takahiro Nishida, Chin Kyoku). The Awarding Ceremonies
took place at Matsuya Salon, Tokyo Japan on May 23, 2005.
Mel Baccay Wins
Tokyo Tech English Speech Contests

Mel Baccay
TOKYO, Dec 8 - Mel Baccay bested 11 other finalists to win the
Grand Prize of the English Speech Contest here in TokyoTech.
Baccay is a second year Doctoral Student of the Department of International
Development Engineering. His speech is entitled "Should We fear
Science?".
There were 43 contestants during the elimination and were trimmed down to 32
during semifinal round last Dec 3.
Other finalists include TokyoTech undergraduates and postgraduate students
from China, Japan, Indonesia and Portugal.
As a prize, Mel was awarded a travel grant to any native English-speaking
country of his choice for two weeks.

The English Speech Contest, held at the Ferrite Memorial Hall, is
organized by the Foreign Language Research and Training Center of TIT. TokyoTech
is observing
English
Year 2004 with the purpose of improving the English proficiency level
and communication skills of the students, faculty and staff.
