National Health Insurance (NHI)
No matter how confident you may be about your health, you do not know when you may become sick or injured. So that everybody can confidently receive medical treatment at such times, the Japanese government has instituted a National Health Insurance System. International students who will be in Japan for a year or longer must join the National Health Insurance System. Those staying in Japan less than one year can also join the sytem. Formalities are carried out at the municipal office's National Health Insurance Section of the region in which you live. After the formalities, you will make monthly payments of the insurance fee. International students, upon declaration of inadequate income, will receive a discount on the monthly fee.
Upon joining the National Health Insurance System you will be issued a National Health Insurance Certificate. If you show this at the reception desk when you receive medical treatment, you will need to pay only 30% of the incurred medical costs. If there is any change in name, address, or householder resulting from a move or marriage, you must notify the National Health Insurance Section within 14 days of the change. You will need to bring your National Health Insurance Certificate and Alien Registration Card.
Tokyo Tech considers it necessary for all sturents to join insurances to cover illness, injury and personal liabilities in addition to the National Health Insurance, condideing the fact that experiments and other empirical activities are conducted as part of dairy educational activities. It is strangly recommended to join these insurances during your stay in Japan.

Insurance Policy of Tokyo Tech
In addition to National Health Insurance, Tokyo Tech requests every incoming students to join disaster and accident insurance and personal liability insurance: the former covers cost of hospitalization and indemnity for disability which are not covered by NHI and the latter covers liabilities caused by damages which you may inflict on others by accident.
