Credits and Minimum Requirement
        In Japanese higher educational system, one subject accounts for 2 credits which usually consists of 15 lectures per semester.. One lecture has 90 minutes. For evaluation, tests or report submissions are usually required. At the end of each semester, Tokyo Tech will make a certificate of your academic results and send it to the office of international studies of your university. You can also get the copy of the certificate.
The minimum requirement for completing YSEP Focused on Research is as follows:
To make a presentation of your Sotsuron (research) at the end of the program
To take at least 20 credits per year including all compulsory subjects
        The following are the compulsory subjects for YSEP Focused on Research students: Sotsuron and Sotsuron Seminar (12 credits per year), Topics on Japan (4 credits per year) and Factory Study Tour (4 credits per year). In addition to these 20 credits, you can take courses of the International Graduate Program and Japanese language course. As for Japanese language, a set of two classes per week is one course (2 credits): the credit conversion is half of the other courses.

As for the YSEP for Experiencing Japan students, Research Project (4 credits) and Topics on Japan(2credits), Factory Study Tour(2 credits) are the compulsory subjects.

Sotsuron and Seminar for Sotsuron
        SOTSURON is the main feature of this program. This is an individual research project under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. Each student selects a research subject after consulting with the supervisor. Discussion on experimental results as well as theory will be done with the supervisor and other laboratory members. The student should submit a report and make an oral- presentation on the research at the end of the program. Please mind that to conduct one research project can be very time and energy consuming, much more than the requirement for 6 credit course. Tokyo Tech is a research oriented university and your experience here will be rewarding in your future career.
In the Seminar for Sotsuron, each student will discuss and present his/her progress of research and/or read technical books/papers with the lead of supervisors.

Research Project (YSEP for Experiencing Japan)
        To conduct a research or related activity (group work or internship) under the guidance and supervision of your supervisor. You will be requested to make a short speech on it at the YEJ completion ceremony.

Courses for Sotsuron
        YSEP students can take courses related to their Sotsuron (research) from the International Graduate Course of Tokyo Tech. The following are the list of subjects conducted in English in the autumn semester, 2004. For further infomation, please check Syllabi for more details.


Common Program for YSEP Students 
        Following are the common courses for YSEP students offered by the International Student Center of Tokyo Tech.
Topics on Japan, 2 credits per semester
Through this course, students are supposed to deepen their understanding of Japanese society and culture through lectures, discussions and visits to relevant places. They are also expected to present the situation of their own country on some topics so as to promote mutual understanding Japanese students will also join this course.

Factory Study Tour, 2 credits per semester
This course aims to understand the concept of advanced technology and system of a company/organization in the variety of fields around the area of Tokyo in Japan. A factory study tour will be carried out about three times in a semester. In addition, the opportunity of the discussion with the people working in the factory will be set up.

Japanese I A/B, 2 classes a week is one course (2 credits) per semester
This course aims at enhancing daily conversation skills for those who have not studied Japanese.Focus is given to oral communication skills and a basic grammar in Japanese. The textbook and video materials include a basic pattern of conversations which are commonly observed in a daily life. Students are encouraged to learn hiragana and katakana (Japanese letters) and a small amount of kanji (Chinese characters).

Japanese II A/B, 2 classes a week is one course (2 credits) per semester
This is a course for those who have finished Japanese I or an equivalent. Focus is given to an oral communication skills and a basic grammar in Japanese.Pair- work and presentation will be used to promote communicative ability in Japanese. Students will be encouraged to participate in class aggressively. Useful vocabularies as well as kanji are also presented in this course.

 
        In addition to these Japanese courses, a Japanese courses at intermidiate and advanced levels and skill classes are provided. For further infomation, click  International Student Center and check the part of "Japanese for Gradnate Students (HOKO)".
