What is YSEP?|
In 2000, Tokyo Institute of Technology started YSEP (Young Scientist Exchange Program), which will provide each overseas student with the unique opportunity to experience the SOTSURON/Research Project as well as related subjects and courses of Japanese language and society.
In the SOTSURON/Research Project, an appropriate supervisor will be assigned for each participant who is to study a selected research topic in the laboratory of the supervisor. The research field of the supervisor and the participant's interest will be taken into consideration in the assignment.
The research topic will be finalized after the discussion between them.
SOTSURON/Research Project thus offers a good opportunity not only to experience different equipment and instruments but also to develop communication, problem solving and public speaking capabilities. In the laboratory, the participant will find Japanese and international students, undergraduate (senior) and graduate students, and can develop international friendship and mutual understanding.
In the YSEP, Tokyo Tech will accept 30~40 overseas students each term, from universities which have concluded Student Exchenge Agreement with it. Participants are to be International Exchange Students during their stay at Tokyo Tech. In addition to Sotsuron/Research Project, courses related with the research topic and of old/modern Japanese society and culture will be offered in English. Supervisors in almost scientific and technological fields are available in Tokyo Tech.
In 2009, YSEP was divided into two programs. The original one year course was renamed YSEP Focused on Research (YFR) and a new half year program was named "YSEP for Experiencing Japan(YEJ)". YEJ puts more emphasis on hands-on experiences, and production of devices or internship at companies/ research institutes can also be counted as part of the research project if the supervisor agrees.
Students admitted to the program are eligible to apply for a scholarship provided by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
Beyond the difference of race, religion and culture, YSEP students are expected to positively exchange with other participants and people on and off campus. We believe this experience will provide you the necessary capacity to live well with other peoples in this age of globalization. You will also absorb the merits of different research approaches through your experience of Sotsuron (research project).
Duration of Stay
YSEP Focused on Research: Students will stay one year from September to next August.
YSEP for Experiencing Japan : Student will stay for half a year.
